- Where is the Village?
- It’s located on Pohnpei, Micronesia, at 7N and 158W, in the western Pacific. The hotel overlooks the lagoon, with islands in the foreground and the barrier reef beyond. It’s a quiet place, among the bread fruit trees and bananas on a point of land that juts out into the lagoon, away from the hustle and bustle of Kolonia. (Maps)
- What are the bungalows?
- The bungalows are in three areas - Sunrise, Sokehs, and the Point. Sunrise is the lowest cost; Sokehs is mid-priced and has a good view; the Point is the quietest and has the best view. (Rates)
- What are the bungalows like?
- The individual thatch roofed bungalows are separate from the Long House. The beds are queen sized water beds, although a futon can be put on the floor. Each bed has it’s own mosquito netting (for the romance), and its own lamp. The beds are turned down at night. (Bungalows)
- When should a reservation be made?
- The Village has 20 bungalows; 17 single units with two queen size beds in each, plus 3 family units. To avoid being turned away, reservations should be made as early as possible. (Rates)
- Where is the best restaurant?
- Although there are other restaurants in Kolonia, most people agree that the best restaurant is at the Village. (Food)
- How is the Village different from other hotels?
- The Village is built above ground on mangrove poles and is entirely thatch-roofed. It won an eco-tourism award from the US Congress as a good example of how things could be. Because we don’t think anything should intrude on you, computers, telephones and fax are at the front desk. (Bob and Patti)
- Will it be hot?
- This is the tropics - the daytime temperature gets up to 95 deg F, and at night it’s about 75 deg.
- Will I need air-condtioning?
- The thatch roof, combined with the water bed and the ceiling fan, will keep you cool and allow the tropical breezes in. If it gets too cold (and it sometimes does), wool blankets are in each closet. (Bungalows)
- Will there be bugs and things?
- Don’t worry; there are no snakes on Pohnpei. An occasional friendly gecko or large spider may be seen. But, they don’t bite and much prefer to avoid you. If you’re allergic, mosquito repellant is in each room and at the bar. It’s rare to find a mosquito in the rooms.
- What’s the weather going to be?
- Predicting the weather is hard to do. Because it sometimes has a cloud cover, Pohnpei is cooler than most tropical islands. Rain usually consists of a 20 minute shower and often comes at night.
- Diving
- Scuba diving in and around Pohnpei is some of the best diving in the world. As one of the few companies involved in scuba diving, visitors often come to Village Tours from the hotels in Kolonia. (Diving, Packages)
- Nan Madol
- A visit to mysterious Nan Madol should not be missed. With Village Tours, take an all-day boat trip visiting Nan Madol, snorkeling with mantas, lunching on a deserted island, and swimming in the famous Kerperhoi waterfall. As the only regular source for tours to Nan Madol, visitors come often come from hotels in Kolonia. (Nan Madol)
- Taxis
- Taxis are plentiful, and are just a telephone call away. Although you may share the car with others, the current price is three dollars per person one way to Kolonia.
- Shopping
- Because of the plane schedule, shopping is sometimes done on the morning of departure. You’re welcome to come along when the Village bus goes to Kolonia at 9:30 every day except Sunday. A taxi will bring you back when you’re through.
- Wood carvings can be found at the carvers huts in Kapinga Village, where the men make wood and ivory nut carvings and the women weave intricate hangings. One of the most popular items to look for is the Pohnpeian skirt. There are no two alike, they fit anybody, and can be found at most stores.
