Best kayaking

Dive certification

Trade winds

The trade winds begin in mid November and continue until May.

Sun

The tropical sun is very harsh on skin. This is especially true with Pohnpi right above the equator. An SPF 15, or higher is strongly recommended.

Money

The currency in Micronesia is in US$. Credit cards are accepted at the Village.

Taxis and rental cars

Rates for rental cars are about $48/day. Taxi fare to/from Kolonia is about $3 US.

Reef shoes

Reef walkers or old tennis shoes are good for Nan Madol and waterfall trips, or for hiking in the jungle.

Computer / Fax / Telephone

A computer for checking email etc. can be used. Telephone and fax services are also available. ATT, MCI, Sprint, and GTE cards are accepted.

Gift shop

There is a small gift shop behind the front desk that sells T-shirts, medicines and jewelry.

Immigration and Customs

Immigration requires a valid passport, a visa and an on-going ticket. Visits of 30 days are allowed. Visas are not required of US citizens.

Carry-on bag

Carry-on luggage should contain what you'll need if your luggage is misplaced.

Language

Although Pohnpeian is the local language, English is understood or spoken by almost everyone.

Laundry

Laundry brought to the front desk in the morning, will be on your bed in the afternoon.

Electricity

Electrical current is 120 volts, 60 hertz. Cameras, lights and razors can be charged in the room.

Local critters

Pohnpei is very safe. There are no snakes on the island. Snacks in the room may attract jungle creatures.

Tipping

Tipping is not expected. But if the service is excellent, it’s always welcome.
